North Dakota has a remarkable mountain bike region at its western border. This is the state with Indian culture, endless prairies and tranquility.
Cycling conditions
The government encourages cycling on paper but this is not yet reflected in concrete actions. Cycling is not permitted on all roads.
Landscape
The east of the North Dakota includes rolling fertile lowlands and it is the ‘bread basket’ of America. To the west, this area changes suddenly at the Missouri Coteau (a steep gradient of 90-180 m) to the sparsely populated prairies of the Great Plains.
Climate
The (land) climate in North Dakota is rather extreme. The short, dry and warm summers provide a brief but intense growing season. Winters are cold.
