LandscapeNew York State has a varied landscape with many forests and lakes. There are three different regions: the Adirondack Mountains, the Appalachian Plateau and Lowland Region. The forested Adirondack Mountains are located in the northeast. The main (western) part of the state is formed by the Appalachian Plateau and consists of rolling hills. The eastern part of the plateau are the Catskill Mountains, a wild and rugged area. The easternmost and southernmost part of the state is the Lowland Region with plains and river valleys.

Climate
There are climatic differences. Summers are hot and dry and winters are cold and wet. Along the Atlantic coast and the Great Lakes in the west, the differences are less extreme.
