San Juan Islands Tour

Summary

Ic san-juan-bike-tour-coast-1742x896

Bike pastoral roads. Cruise beside sparkling waters. Hike through rich old-growth forest. Spend a half-day kayaking Roche Harbor's placid waters with a naturalist/guide. Our most popular tour of Washington's San Juan Islands highlights the very best of life on the Salish Sea. Top it off with sumptuous lodging and fresh island cuisine. Conde Nast Traveler named Friday Harbor (where you'll spend a good bit of time) one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. And Fodor's Travel Guide trumpets, "You won't find a nicer place to ride than these islands in the Pacific Northwest's Puget Sound."

Itinerary

Included / Not Included – lodging

Day 1: Explore Fidalgo Island, Then hop aboard a ferry to sail away to San Juan Island.

Meet us in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle north to Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island. After a bike fitting, board a ferry to cruise the Salish Sea to Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. Ride to Cattle Point, where you’re greeted by incredible views of Lopez Island, San Juan Island, Mt. Constitution and other places you’ll explore this week. Head back to Friday Harbor to browse its shops, art galleries, and whale museum. Spend three nights in pampered luxury at the historic Edenwild Inn. Their fresh, gourmet breakfasts and convenient location in town make it a top choice for an island getaway!
Meals L D Distance 29 miles Elevation + 1316 ft / -1145 ft

Day 2: Explore Lopez Island: Spencer Spit, Agate Beach and Watmough Bay

Explore Lopez Island today. Lopez is the flattest, most rural, and least populated of the three main San Juan Islands. It’s also considered the ‘bicyclist’s island’ for its quiet roads, gentle terrain, spectacular marine vistas, and friendly residents who wave as you bicycle past. Ride clockwise around the island, starting with Spencer Spit State Park, then south to Watmough Bay (watch for seals!). Listen to the sound of the waves gently stirring the rocks on the shore at Agate Beach. This is a great day for views of the Olympic Mountains and looking ahead to some of the places you will explore this week.
Meals B L D lodging: Edenwild Inn Distance 38 miles Elevation +2024 ft / - 2022 ft

Day 3: Ferry to Orcas Island then hike or bike to the summit of Mt. Constitution, highest point in the islands

Take a short Washington State Ferry cruise to Orcas Island, the largest and most mountainous of the San Juans. Ride to Eastsound, explore the town and have lunch on your own. Back on the bicycle, pedal to Moran State Park and Cascade Lake. Hike through the last remaining old-growth forest in the islands up to the summit of Mt. Constitution, the literal high-point of the San Juans. Prefer to ride? Challenge the switchbacks on the road to the top of “Mt. C” instead of hiking the trail. It’s one for the books! Either way, your reward at the top is a marvelous view of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges and the emerald archipelago flung wide below. Ferry to San Juan Island where the Earthbox Inn will be our home for the next three nights.
Meals B, D, Elevation level: +1220 ft / -1220 ft (Mt Constitution adds 10mi; +2586 ft/-267 ft)

Day 4: Kayak to turn island with San Juan Kayak Expeditions

Kayak the calm waters of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea this morning. Our sister company, San Juan Kayak Expeditions, will provide two-person ‘yaks, guides and instruction. Spend the morning watching and learning about the abundant bird and marine life along the rocky, tree-lined shore on the way to Turn Island for a picnic lunch and the opportunity for a nice 1 mile walk around the circumference of the island. After kayaking, stroll about Friday Harbor, visit the Whale Museum, or take in the Art Gallery. Enjoy dinner on your own tonight in Friday Harbor.
Meals B L Distance: 3-5 mi

Day 5: Bike to Pelindaba Lavender Farm and historic Lime Kiln State Park, for whale-watching spots.

This morning, bicycle the serene shores of San Juan Island, enjoying open farmland and marine vistas from quiet country roads. Visit English Camp, a national historic park that was once part of the “Pig War” between England and the United States, and Lime Kiln State Park, one of the best orca (‘killer’) whale watching spots in the country. Tour the heavenly-scented fields at Pelindaba Lavender Farm and take your pick of several different routes back to town. Dinner tonight will be at the acclaimed Coho Restaurant.
Meals B L D Distance 23-33 miles elevation +1985 ft / -1985 ft

Day 6: Pedal to cattle point, then enjoy Friday Harbor before enjoying a scenic, traffic free, float plane ride back to Seattle.

Ride to American Camp near Cattle Point, hear the story of the little known “Pig War” between England and the United States. Rife with wildflowers in the spring and early summer, you might think you’d been transported to the southern California coastline were it not for the snowcapped mountain backdrop. Walk to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands. Watch for deer and foxes here as you do a little beachcombing and savor views of the Olympic Mountains across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. On a clear day you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier from here as well – 125 miles!
Head back to Friday Harbor to browse its shops, art galleries, and whale museum. Bypass the infamous Seattle gridlock (on a Friday, no less!) and return to the “big city” in style via a chartered float plane. Savor birds-eye views of Puget Sound, Cascade Mountains, and Olympics as you soar over and past the traffic. Meet the van and a final celebration on the shores of Lake Union in downtown Seattle.
Meals: B,L Distance: 12 miles Elevation: +472 ft /-472 ft

We work closely with the innkeepers to make sure they understand your needs and ours, whether that is having a place to store your bike, an early morning breakfast or a convenient place to park the van, they are as committed to your vacation experience as we are.
Lodging is based upon two people to a room with a private bath. If you’re traveling solo on any of our trips, we’ll assign you a roommate of the same gender and often of the same age bracket. There is no extra charge if we can’t find you a roommate, even if you sign up the day before the trip starts. You can guarantee yourself a private room and bath if you pay the Single Room Fee. Occasionally a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed.
