San Juan Islands Tour

Summary

Ic san-juan-bike-tour-coast-1742x896

Bike pastoral roads. Cruise beside sparkling waters. Hike through rich old-growth forest. Spend a half-day kayaking Roche Harbor's placid waters with a naturalist/guide. Our most popular tour of Washington's San Juan Islands highlights the very best of life on the Salish Sea. Top it off with sumptuous lodging and fresh island cuisine. Conde Nast Traveler named Friday Harbor (where you'll spend a good bit of time) one of the Most Beautiful Towns in America. And Fodor's Travel Guide trumpets, "You won't find a nicer place to ride than these islands in the Pacific Northwest's Puget Sound."

Day 1

Meet us in Seattle for a complimentary van shuttle north to Anacortes, on Fidalgo Island. After a bike fitting, board a ferry to cruise the Salish Sea to Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. Ride to Cattle Point, where you're greeted by incredible views of Lopez Island, San Juan Island, Mt. Constitution and other places you'll explore this week. Head back to Friday Harbor to browse its shops, art galleries and whale museum. Tonight, stay at idyllic Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes, home for the next three nights. The Fine Living Channel hailed Lakedale as one of the '10 Most Romantic Hotels in the World.'
Meals L D Distance 28 miles Elevation + 1807 ft / -1584 ft

Day 2: Bike to Pelindaba Lavender Farm and historic Lime Kiln State Park, one of the country's best whale-watching spots.

This morning, bicycle the serene shores of San Juan Island, enjoying open farmland and marine vistas from quiet country roads. Visit English Camp, a national historic park that was once part of the “Pig War” between England and the United States, and Lime Kiln State Park, one of the best orca ('killer') whale watching spots in the country. Tour the heavenly-scented fields at Pelindaba Lavender Farm. Take your pick between 3 different routes back to Lakedale Lodge.
Meals B L Distance 23-33 miles Elevation +1985 ft / -1985 ft

Day 3: Kayak from Roche Harbor. Hike Mt. Young.

Kayak the calm waters of Puget Sound and the Salish Sea this morning. A local sea kayaking outfitter provides two-person 'yaks, guides and instruction. Spend the morning watching and learning about the abundant bird and marine life along the rocky, tree-lined shore. Wander the tiny coastal village of Roche Harbor. This afternoon, swim in one of Lakedale's three lakes, relax at the inn or get a massage. Or hike nearby Mt. Young to relish commanding views of the islands. Dinner is on your own tonight in Friday Harbor at the restaurant of your choosing.

Day 4: Ferry to Orcas Island. Ride to Moran State Park. Hike or bike to the spectacular summit of Mt. Constitution, highest point in the islands. Catch a ferry to Lopez Island

Take another short Washington State Ferry cruise to Orcas Island, largest of the San Juans. Ride to Eastsound, explore the town and have lunch. Back on the bicycle, pedal to Moran State Park and Cascade Lake. Hike a forested trail up to the summit of Mt. Constitution, highest viewpoint in the islands. Prefer to ride? Challenge the switchbacks on the road to the top of ‘Mt. C' instead of hiking the trail. It's one for the books! Either way, your reward at the top is a marvelous view of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges and the emerald archipelago flung wide below. Ferry to Lopez Island for a private catered dinner at the Edenwild Inn, home for the next two nights
Meals B D Distance 18 miles Elevation + 1220 ft / -12220 ft
Mt Constitution adds 10 mi +2586 ft / -267 ft

Day 5: Ride to Spencer Spit State Park, Agate Beach County Park and Shark Reef Sanctuary.

Explore Lopez Island today. Lopez is the flattest, most rural and least populated of the three main San Juan Islands. It’s also considered the 'bicyclist’s island' for its quiet roads, gentle terrain, spectacular marine vistas, and friendly residents who wave as you bicycle past. Ride clockwise around the island, starting with Spencer Spit State Park, then south to Agate Beach. Stroll out to Iceberg Point for lunch at the 7th Parallel. Check out the views of the Olympic Mountains and many of the places you've explored this week. Ride east to Watmaugh Bay (watch for seals!) Then head north again to the Edenwild.
Meals B L D Distance 38 miles elevation +2024 ft / -2022 ft

Day 6: Enjoy a relaxing morning at the Edenwild. Ride to Fisherman Bay for a last sea-level look at the islands. Then board a chartered plane for a spectacular flight back to Seattle.

Enjoy a relaxing morning and breakfast at the Edenwild. Bicycle the 'Free Willy' ride, out to Fisherman Bay, then back to the Edenwild for lunch in the village. Hop aboard a chartered float plane for a glorious return flight over the islands and back to Seattle.
Meals: B,L Distance: 15 miles Elevation: +588 ft /-588 ft

NOTE: We have a stored fleet of “Island Bicycles” at the Edenwild Inn which we will be using for the ride this morning. Your personal bicycle (including our fleet bikes used for the first five days of the tour) will be returning to Seattle with our van that leaves Lopez Island on the early morning ferry.

The hotels, Inns, and B&Bs we use are always among the finest the area has to offer. Our smaller group sizes(max. 13) allow us to stay at some award-winning places that can’t handle groups of 25 or more. We work closely with the innkeepers to make sure they understand your needs and ours, whether that is having a place to store your bike, an early morning breakfast or a convenient place to park the van, they are as committed to your vacation experience as we are.
Lodging is based upon two people to a room with a private bath. If you’re traveling solo on any of our trips, we’ll assign you a roommate of the same gender and often of the same age bracket. There is no extra charge if we can’t find you a roommate, even if you sign up the day before the trip starts. You can guarantee yourself a private room and bath if you pay the Single Room Fee. Occasionally a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed.
