Cycling in New Jersey

Outside the crowds there are good cycling options in the industrialized state of New Jersey. The state has the proud nickname ‘Garden State’.

Cycling conditions
There is governmental support for bicycle projects. The bike infrastructure is pretty good but traffic can be dense. There is a mountain bike route network.

Landscape
In the extreme northwest of the state lie the forested Kittatinny Mountains, foothills of the Appalachians. The coastal plain, approximately 60% of the total area of the state, ends at the seafront with a row of dunes. Along the 200 km long coast line there are coastal islands, peninsulas and salt-marshes at high tide. In the 18th century, New Jersey was named the Garden State, for its fertile soil. Nowadays it is a fairly industrial state, with a good nature preservation.

Climate
In the south, New Jersey has hot, humid summers and mild winters. The north has cold winters. Especially in the spring and autumn the weather is pleasant.
