Itinerary

After enjoying New Orleans’ famous hospitality, hopefully not too, too much, the riders will pedal out of the Big Easy and head out along the Gulf Coast into Mississippi. The route continues along the water where the riders can relax on some beautiful beaches and enjoy the resort town of Biloxi with its numerous casinos. Then it is into Alabama for a visit to Dauphin Island with its white sand beaches and Auduban Bird Sanctuary. The cyclists wheel onto a ferry to cross Mobile Bay and pedal through the scenic Gulf Islands National Seashore and on into the Florida Panhandle, stopping in the seaside town of Apalachicola for some fresh oysters. Finally the riders leave the coast and head inland to Tallahassee, Florida’s capital for a rest day.

Perhaps having learned a little about Florida’s chequered past at the Museum of Florida History, the cyclists will spin along a beautiful bike path out of the city before crossing into Georgia, their last state on this cross-country road trip. The route passes through small, rural towns where folks like to take it easy, sitting out on their porches sipping iced tea and waving to brightly coloured, lycra-clad cyclists. The riders will pedal through Valdosta where they can ride some rollercoasters at Wild Adventures Park and historic Waycross (6 rail lines meet here), perhaps to venture out to the nearby Okefenokee Swamp Park. Before they know it, they will be pulling into Savannah. With its southern charm, historic centre and antebellum architecture this romantic city marks the end of this incredible section.
